Reduction in Income Tax Rate
Income Tax rate cut to 5 pc for individuals in income bracket of Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, all other categories to get uniform benefit of Rs 500 per person.
What does it mean for YOU : 12.5k more for vacations, considering you have a working spouse that doubles up to 25k, put this in a recurring or fixed deposit, enjoy the interest plus principal and plan a trip.
Emphasis on Road Infrastructure
Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s Golden Quadrilateral was a dream come reality to many, time taken in crisscrossing the country was drastically reduced. In continuance Union Budget 2017 seems to be embarking on another such project with a vision of 133-km per day road construction under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana as against 73-km in 2011-14. Budget allocation for highways has been stepped up to Rs 64,000 crore.

IRCTC Service Charge Withdrawn
Another small give away to encourage digitalisation, you now pay no Service charge on e-tickets booked through IRCTC. They stand withdrawn and we may soon have a competitive booking facility bringing huge respite to anxious travellers. Also earlier the service charge levied on each ticket was not refundable in case of a cancellation, with this change this is also taken care of.
What does it mean for YOU : Rs.20 less for second & sleeper class, Rs.40 less for all other classes, 4 cups of Kulhad Chai if nothing more 😉
Renewed focus on Railway
While many of us would love to travel by train more often, the hygiene and cleanliness is a big put off and this budget shows some promise there with bio-toilets for all coaches by 2019. Long overdue, railway line of 3,500 km to be commissioned in 2017, dedicated tourism/pilgrimage trains, 500 stations to be made differently-abled friendly and introduction of Coach Mitra facility, a big respite to commuters.

Emphasis on Safety
With the Rs 1 lakh cr corpus for railway safety fund we certainly hope safer rail travel for solo travellers. Unmanned level crossings that claims hundreds of lives to be eliminated by 2020.
Traveller Goes Digital
This one will make the youth of the country super pleased, an allocation of Rs 10,000 cr for Bharat Net project for providing high-speed broadband in FY18 will help the traveller to use internet at uninterrupted speed.

Go Cashless, Save More For a Holiday
Government is all to introduce two new schemes to promote BHIM App – referral bonus for users and cash back for traders. Duty exempted on various POS machines to encourage digital payments

Issuance of Passports Simplified & Made More Accessible
The passport issuance norms underwent a long overdue change and to service applications, head post offices will now be roped in to provide public services related to passport. So, start planning your international vacation and apply for the renewal with six months of validity left to get a verification relief.
Quit Tobacco, Go Skiing
Reasons galore to quit smoking, excise duty on pan masala containing tobacco (Gutkha) raised to 12 pc and Excise duty on non-filter cigarettes of length not exceeding 65 mm raised to Rs 311 per thousand.Good time to quit these life threatening habits and save for more travel.
